Appropriately Name Networked Windows Computers

October 8th, 2009

configuring-client-computer-window-xpIt’s vital while setting up a peer-to-peer Windows networking that each and every computer in the network must be configured properly. It should have a unique name or identity. However computers with the names that violate Windows guidelines during configuration may for several technical reasons, fail to be in the networking with their peers over the LAN. Hence one must ensure that the computers are named suitably as per the following set naming regulations:

• Ensure all computer names are unique. Hence no two computers can possess the same computer name.
• Special characters must be avoided in all computer names. On every occasion possibly try not to use any of the special characters, when naming Windows computers

• Ensure each computer name is maximum 15 characters long at length.
• Mostly avoid making use of lower-cases in the letters used in computer names whenever it is possible. However it’s not case sensitive on Windows Vista OS. The case of characters (lower or upper) it is ignored. But all the Microsoft Windows older versions treat computer names as case sensitive. Hence all upper cases are recommended while entering the computer names to avoid all possible name conflicts this would help all Windows computers to identify each other very well.
